Bentomat®/Claymax® Geosynthetic Clay Liners
CETCO is the world leader in the production of geosynthetic clay liners. Our Bentomat® and Claymax® geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are high performance environmental liners manufactured with durable high-strength geotextiles and a uniform layer of low-permeability granular Volclay® sodium bentonite. The Bentomat patented manufacturing process utilizes a needle punched technique which encapsulates the sodium bentonite between two layers of geotextile, inhibiting migration of the clay in its dry or hydrated state. The geotextiles offer a long lasting resistance to physical and chemical break-down in harsh environments. The bentonite’s high swelling capacity and low permeability provide an effective hydraulic seal. With a total thickness of less than one inch, CETCO GCLs provide better hydraulic performance than several feet of compacted clay.
CETCO laminated GCL products consist of two water barriers-bentonite clay and an additional flexible plastic membrane. The membrane is permanently laminated to the outer textile surface. For extra slope stability, an additional non-woven geotextile can be attached to the laminate to increase interface friction performance.

CETCO Bentomat and Claymax products have been installed in numerous waste containment applications throughout the world. Our GCLs offer several advantages over traditional compacted clay liners – improved hydraulic performance, easier installation and use of less air space within a disposal cell. Because of their unique self-healing sodium bentonite base, our liners resist cracking that typically occurs in compacted clay liners subjected to repeated freeze/thaw conditions. GCLs have become the standard clay component of composite lining and cover systems and are typically used in combination with geomembranes, drainage geocomposites, and geotextiles.

In-Situ Capping

For projects requiring an impermeable in-situ cap, CETCO GCLs make excellent sub-aqueous, hydraulic barriers. GCLs effectively separate contaminated sediment from surface waters, provide scouring and bio-intrusion protection and minimize advective contaminant transport.
Available GCL Products

Claymax®200R is a non-reinforced GCL with two lightweight nonwoven geotextiles encapsulating a layer of Volclay® sodium bentonite. Ideally suited for mild slopes, Claymax 200R maximizes both performance and value in one ingeniously straightforward product. A completely self-seaming GCL, there's simply no better GCL than Claymax 200R for lining the flat areas of a landfill.

Bentomat® ST is a reinforced GCL consisting of a layer of Volclay® sodium bentonite encapsulated between two geotextiles, needlepunched together for maximum performance under a wide variety of field conditions. This integrated matrix of bentonite and needlepunced fibers provides high shear strength and allows Bentomat to maintain low permeability. Bentomat ST has a woven, slit-film upper geotextile for maximizing intimate contact in composite liner systems.
Bentomat® DN
is a reinforced needlepunched GCL that not only has high internal shear strength, but also provides excellent interface friction on both sides of the GCL. Bentomat DN is ideally suited for steep-slope liner/cover systems where intimate geomembrane contact is less critical than overall liner system stability.
Bentomat® SDN
is a reinforced needlepunched GCL that encapsulates a layer of Volclay sodium bentonite between two nonwoven geotextiles needlepunched together for high internal shear strength and good interface friction performances. Bentomat SDN may be a cost effective alternative for steep slope liner/cover systems where overall liner system stability is important.
Bentomat® CL is a reinforced GCL composed of two carrier geotextiles needlepunched together to encapsulate a layer of Volclay sodium bentonite. A composite lamination gives the GCL excellent hydraulic performance and provides puncture and tensile strengths beyond conventional plastic membranes. Bentomat CL is ideal for landfills, ponds, surface impoundments and other containment projects.
